These films have made the fashion alerts go buzzing with their new and innovative use of salwar suits and making them a trend for generations to follow.


1. Waqt

Why not start all retro; with the baap of all salwar suit trends? The tight body hugging salwar suits became the groundbreaking Bollywood ishtyle. It wasn’t just a costume; it defined an entire generation of liberated women breaking the shackles of traditional conformity. The timeless salwar suits with its pastel shades and classic fitting was the blockbuster hit of the swinging 60s. Sadhana who was herself crowned as a fashionista created ripples with her trademark sleeveless kurta and churidar style which very soon found a place in every fashion wannabe’s wardrobe.


2. Dil Toh Pagal Hai

The film was an eyeful for fashion mongers. Manish Malhotra’s finesse over designing was able to make the ethnic garbs stand-out against the tight sexy leotards. Using chiffon and light silhouettes, Manish Malhotra showed that salwar suits can be beautiful in its minimalistic approach and monochromatic fabrics. It was purely 90s – changing fashion for changing times. Madhuri’s charming smile and chiffon suits added an easy breezy feel to the much appreciated musical.


3. Kabhie Khushi Kabhie Gham

Well, you let Aki Narula design the costumes of Bunty aur Babli and let his magic do the talking. The collared short kurtas and colorful patiala salwars sported by the vivacious Rani Mukerjee was what the new millennial was waiting for. The days of subdued colors were gone; it was all bright and vibrant. Rani became our girl next door with her gorgeous and easily related wardrobe which was a hit amongst college goers for its sheer wearability.

5. Veer Zaara

Though you were distracted by the heart wrenching love story of Veer and Zaara, you can rarely miss the eye-catching salwar suits that Preity Zinta’s Zaara wore throughout the film. Shot in Punjab, each costume was better than the other. The breathtaking salwars made our dimpled girl look every bit of the bubbly Punjabi kudi!

6. Jab We Met

Everything about Geet was infectious; the same goes with her style. Jab We Met made bright Punjabi-style salwar suits and Patiala pants a trend of the decade. Casual, easy and beautiful those Patiala pants were nothing but mauja hi mauja. Kareena Kapoor’s wardrobe also dragged Phulkari embroidery into limelight.

7. Saawariya

The film bombed at Box office, but it did reinvent the classic anarkali- style salwar suits. The credit for anarkali suits must go to the all-time classic Mughal-E-Azam, but it was Saawariya that brought the anarkali-style salwars into the mainstream fashion. The demure Sonam Kapoor brought life to the effortless velvet floor length beauties.

8. Tanu Weds Manu

The sassy beauty Kangana Ranaut ushered an era of fashion prowess in the silver screen with Tanu Weds Manu. After leaving the critics awestruck with her powerhouse performance, the Ghani Bawri diva gave us major fashion goals with her chic and classy look throughout the film. The easy on eye chiffon salwar suits in pastel shades with light embroidery earned full marks from the fashion police.

9. Queen

Rani gave us vacation goals with Queen. It also gave us a hope to dress minimal and still stand-out in the crowd. The plain and simple cotton kurtas that Kangana Ranaut wore in the film gave us summer wardrobe cues – easy, breezy and beautiful. Her dresses were ethnic, quirky, edgy and above all fun and stylish.

10. Piku

There lies a Piku in all of us – confident, independent and individualistic.  Piku showed that ethnic kurtas can be office outfits for meetings, paired with ankle length palazzos and little make-up and jewelry. Designer Veera Kapoor made office wear fun and ethnic. Deepika’s look throughout the film was a perfect combo of style functionality. It portrays a typical girl who looks after household chores in the morning, office work during the day and a sick ailing father at night.
